Baccarat looks formal on camera, but it is one of the simplest games in any casino. You make one decision per hand, which bet to back, and the dealer does everything else. This guide explains the baccarat rules step by step, with examples, so you can follow any live table within a few minutes.
What is baccarat?
Baccarat is a card game in which two hands, called Player and Banker, are dealt, and the hand whose total is closer to 9 wins. You do not play either hand yourself. You simply bet on which one will win, or on a Tie.
As for the baccarat meaning, the name comes from the Italian baccara, "zero", because tens and picture cards count as zero. The version played in almost every online casino is Punto Banco: the casino deals both hands, and fixed rules decide whether a third card is drawn. Nothing you do after placing your bet affects the cards.
How to play baccarat in five steps
- Place your bet on Player, Banker or Tie before the betting time runs out. Live tables give you about 12 to 15 seconds; speed tables give you less.
- The dealer deals two cards to Player and two cards to Banker, face up.
- The totals are counted. If either hand has 8 or 9 (a "natural"), the round ends.
- A third card may be drawn for Player, then for Banker, following the fixed drawing rules below.
- The hand closer to 9 wins. Winning bets are paid and a new round starts.
That is the whole game. The drawing rules look complicated, but the dealer, or the software, applies them for you.
Card values in baccarat
| Cards | Value |
|---|---|
| Ace | 1 |
| 2 to 9 | face value |
| 10, Jack, Queen, King | 0 |
A hand's total is the last digit of the sum. If the cards add up to 10 or more, you drop the first digit:
- 7 + 5 = 12, so the hand is worth 2
- 9 + 9 = 18, so the hand is worth 8
- King + 6 = 6, so the hand is worth 6
The highest possible total is 9, and no hand can "bust".
Third card rules
These baccarat game rules decide when a third card is dealt. You never have to call them yourself, but knowing them helps you understand what you are watching.
Player's hand
| Player's first two cards | Action |
|---|---|
| 0 – 5 | Draws a third card |
| 6 – 7 | Stands |
| 8 – 9 | Natural: no one draws |
Banker's hand
If Player stands on 6 or 7, Banker follows the same rule: draws on 0–5, stands on 6–7.
If Player draws a third card, Banker's move depends on Banker's total and on the value of Player's third card:
| Banker's total | Banker draws if Player's third card is | Banker stands if Player's third card is |
|---|---|---|
| 0 – 2 | any card | – |
| 3 | anything except 8 | 8 |
| 4 | 2 – 7 | 0, 1, 8, 9 |
| 5 | 4 – 7 | 0 – 3, 8, 9 |
| 6 | 6 or 7 | anything else |
| 7 | – | always stands |
A worked example
Player is dealt 3 and 2, a total of 5, so Player draws. The third card is a 6, making 11, which counts as 1.
Banker is dealt Queen and 4, a total of 4. Player's third card was a 6, so Banker draws. Banker gets a 3, making 7.
Banker wins, 7 against 1.
Baccarat payouts and house edge
| Bet | Pays | House edge (8 decks) |
|---|---|---|
| Banker | 0.95 to 1 (5% commission) | 1.06% |
| Player | 1 to 1 | 1.24% |
| Tie | 8 to 1 | 14.36% |
| Player Pair / Banker Pair | 11 to 1 | about 10.4% |
If the hand ends in a Tie, Banker and Player bets are returned, so you lose nothing on them.
Banker wins slightly more often than Player, about 45.9% of hands against 44.6% (the rest are ties). That is why the casino takes a 5% commission on Banker wins. Even after the commission, Banker remains the cheapest bet on the baccarat table.
Some tables pay Tie at 9 to 1 instead of 8 to 1. That cuts its house edge to about 4.8%, but it is still four times more expensive than Banker.

Baccarat strategy: what helps and what does not
There is no strategy that beats baccarat in the long run, because you cannot influence the cards. What a baccarat strategy can do is make your money last longer and stop you from making expensive mistakes.
What actually helps
- Bet on Banker most of the time. It has the lowest house edge in the game.
- Skip the Tie and the side bets. Tie costs about Rs 14 of every Rs 100 staked over time, and pair bets cost about Rs 10.
- Choose classic tables while you learn. Speed Baccarat deals a hand roughly every 27 seconds, which means you lose more per hour at the same stake.
- Avoid tables with extra fees. Lightning Baccarat adds a 20% fee to every bet in exchange for random multipliers.
- Set a budget and a stop point before you sit down, and keep to them.
What does not help
- Betting systems such as Martingale (doubling after a loss). They raise your stake quickly and hit the table limit after a short losing streak.
- Reading the scoreboard. The bead road and big road on live tables show past results. Every hand is independent, so a run of Banker wins says nothing about the next hand.
- Prediction apps and "signals". Anyone selling a tool that predicts baccarat results is selling something that does not work.

So, the honest answer to "baccarat rules: how to play and win" is this: you cannot guarantee a win, but you can play the cheapest bets, at a pace you control, with money you can afford to lose.
Baccarat variants you will see online
- Punto Banco: the standard game described on this page.
- No Commission Baccarat: Banker pays 1 to 1, but a Banker win on 6 pays only 1 to 2.
- Speed Baccarat: the same rules with shorter betting time.
- Squeeze / Peek Baccarat: the cards are revealed slowly for drama. The odds do not change.
- Lightning Baccarat: random card multipliers up to 512x, with a 20% fee on every bet.
- Dragon Tiger: a simpler one-card cousin of baccarat. See our Dragon Tiger guide.
Try a baccarat demo first
Many online casinos offer RNG baccarat, which you can usually play in demo mode without money once you have an account. A baccarat demo is the easiest way to watch the third card rules in action before you join a live table. Questions players ask
What is the easiest way to learn how to play baccarat?
Learn the card values, remember that 9 is the best hand, and bet on Banker. The dealer applies the third card rules for you.
Do I need to know the third card rules to play?
No. They are applied automatically. Knowing them only helps you follow what happens on the table.
What does a natural mean?
A two-card total of 8 or 9. When either hand has a natural, no more cards are drawn.
Why is the Banker bet charged commission?
Because Banker wins slightly more often than Player. The 5% commission keeps a small edge for the casino.
Baccarat rules: how to win more often?
You cannot change the odds, but you can avoid the expensive bets: back Banker, skip Tie and pairs, and play classic tables at a steady pace.
Is there a baccarat strategy that always wins?
No. Every hand is independent, and no system or prediction tool changes the odds.
How many decks are used?
Most online and live tables use 8 decks, shuffled after about 60 to 70 hands or dealt from an automatic shuffler.
